March 7, 2023: Full Moon in VIRGO

The brightest night of the month is here once more! Full Moons bring energies of completion and culmination, and oftentimes, flashes of emotional insights that were previously overlooked. Emotions are heightened, and feelings are potent, so fasten your emotional seatbelts!

This month’s FULL MOON happens in 16°40 in the realm of Mutable Earth, VIRGO, the sign of the Virgin.

VIRGO (The Virgin)

Virgo, with its reputation for being too critical and nagging, for its seeming devotion to the unattainable idea of perfection, is arguably the most misunderstood sign of all. Virgo is the Latin word for “maiden”, often pertaining to a young, unmarried woman who is still considered “pure”, a virgin. Thus, where Virgo is in our charts represents where we aspire towards the attainment of the ideal. Virgo energy holds a premium towards putting order where it may, instinctively following an internal compass that points only to the direction of perceived perfection. It carries with it the ability to differentiate what is essential from what is not. What is important, from what is dispensable. It carves out, polishes, and refines whatever it can, to bring about the harmony that it envisions in its psyche. It identifies what is mediocre in any situation, and discards the clutter around it that distracts it from achieving its highest potential.

However, when the goal is perfection, the journey never ends. The traveler is weary and anxious, but the destination is never reached.

What is not picked up easily by the casual bystander, is that this ability, this drive for growth and refinement, is not selective. By the same lens of narrowed focus upon which it sees the whole of experience, Virgo looks in the mirror and immediately identifies what it actually is, and sees too, at the same time, what it can be. The Critical eye that Virgo is so known for, is not one sided, and is in fact, much harsher when turned inwards. It measures itself the way it does the world. This is what I am… BUT this is what I should be. This awareness, this discernment, is a burden that Virgo carries by default. This humility and even shame, almost, for not meeting its own expectations, is crippling. So it questions its ability much louder than anyone can and humbly undersells itself, putting endless disclaimers around any output, to neutralize high expectations it thinks the world may have. Virgo does this not to save face per se, or to preserve the self, but to save others from being disappointed, and being the cause of the letdown. This drive to create perfection, mixed with humility and a proclivity for low self-esteem, creates a predisposition to awkward tension, nervousness, and anxiety, and THAT is what is easily picked up by everyone else.

Most importantly, what is often misconstrued is that this pursuit of perfection is, more than anything, an act of service. Virgo traditionally is also the sign of a servant who toils endlessly to make sure the household is running smoothly, and everyone experiences comfort and harmony. It exhausts itself from trying to attain this dream, and it deeply mourns its inability to fully deliver. Something always breaks down, mess is a part of life, making this a never-ending job, an endless pursuit. But it soldiers through, with selfless intent. Where there is cleanliness, there is order. Where there is order, there is peace, where there is peace there is contentment, and where there is contentment, there is happiness. This is the gift it wants to give to the world. And in moments where it feels like it is able to come close to the ideal, it is weighed down by the fear and pressure to sustain. Calmness is elusive for the Virgo. But boy oh boy, the house sure is cleaner than clean, and everything around it, as tidy as can be!

FULL MOON IN VIRGO

This month’s Full Moon carries with it a profound energy shift that is indeed, one for the books. With Luna in full regalia illuminating Saturn’s entry to Pisces, we are reminded of past mistakes that brought us to the current delusions that we are now trapped in, swimming in currents too strong to escape. Past hurts, trauma, and our inability to fix ourselves because we are too distracted by our emotions, all rise up to the surface, lining up to be sorted out. Some of these experiences are necessary, and some are just excess baggage that we burden ourselves with. This full Moon allows us to separate illusion from reality, conjuring up solid sensibility out of abstract thoughts and ideas that are based only on intangible feelings. What is integral to our growth, and what weighs us down? Ironically, with Uranus trining this Full Moon, the feeling of structure and order may bring excitement and a hopeful sense of possibility, like an addict reaching his threshold, finally asking for, or willing to receive help. Bad habits are fragile under this Moon, and the ability to purge them out of your system arrives, almost as an inevitable consequence. How you utilize this ability, is all up to you!
