DECEMBER 27, 2023: FULL MOON in CANCER

The last FULL MOON of the year packs a punch – but not in the way that you might expect, dear reader. As with all full Moons, Luna shows off, dressing up in her full regalia, but this time as an homage to the year that passed, 12 glorious months of life, with its seasons of trials, tribulations, joy, laughter, but most definitely, of lessons and realizations, and ideally, added wisdom, no matter how incremental it may be. This full Moon brings with it a wrapping up of all the emotions we’ve accumulated throughout the year, like a summarization almost, a reading of the minutes of the meeting that was 2023.

What emotional goals were accomplished, if any? Which of our relationships were strengthened, and were there any that were past their expiration? What emotions carried you through the waves, and what was energetically a ball and chain that weighed you down, making it almost impossible to come up for air? What lessons do we keep, and what do we discard?

The full Moon happens in the wistful, poignant, but hopeful sign of Cancer, the sign that evokes the past more than any other. Cancer as an archetype predominantly focuses on the ties that bind, opening them up to vulnerabilities that they ironically strongly fight against, creating a perpetual tug of war between emotional dependency and energetic severance.

The ideology of Cancer is deeply rooted in the quest for emotional security. Cancer, like Pisces and Scorpio, is a sensitive water sign, with a strong capability to absorb information that is non-verbal. It is highly attuned to emotions around it, like an antenna that receives all kinds of signals. Therefore, its perspective is strongly dependent on its deep need for emotional defense: ‘I love you, and my greatest joy comes from you accepting my love and care, while also reciprocating these feelings.’ This of course, is not exclusive to a romantic context. If the affection is not mutual, a typical Cancerian response might be to convince themselves that they really don’t actually care for the person, and that they are better without. This self-deception often stems from the pain of unrequited affection, be it with family, friends, or romantic prospects. To know Cancer deeply is to understand that this attempt at emotional detachment is a very important necessity. The more sensitive one is, the higher need to protect the heart, after all! Despite this, their departure isn’t abrupt. Instead, it’s a gradual withdrawal, each slow step carrying a silent hope for the other party to insist on a reversal. This slow retreat reflects the deep-seated desire for emotional connection, colored with the fear of outright rejection.

This lunation is filtered through this Cancerian lens of loving so deeply, albeit so cautiously. As we look back on the year that was, our sensitive sentiments receive mitigations from two significant planets, Jupiter and Saturn, adding texture and color to our experience of this Full Moon.

Luna engages in supportive conversations throughout this end-of-the-year send-off. A close sextile with Jupiter, the planet of possibilities, establishes an exciting drive for expansion, optimism, and good faith, allowing us, without hesitation, to dive right into the heart of the holidays, with love and peaceful abundance. We are energetically filled to the brim, enabling us to give from the overflow, generous with our time, and our financial and emotional resources.

Luna also converses with Saturn, introducing a necessary balancing act. Saturn’s trine, a stable and supportive aspect, grounds our enthusiasm with a sobering, almost methodical approach. This serves as an energetic scaffold, safely containing the exuberant rush brought by Jupiter. Saturn, in its realistic and disciplined nature, tempers the emotional grandeur Jupiter tends to invoke. Thus, we find ourselves in a comfortable middle ground, where our expressions of love are both bountiful and practical, spirited yet rational.

This interplay creates an environment akin to swimming in a massive, serene saltwater pool. Here, the boundaries of Saturn’s discipline ensure safety and containment, while Jupiter’s buoyancy lifts our spirits, allowing us to float with trust and ease. We may feel like we are fully swimming in the ocean of emotion, where we can fully indulge in its sentimental depths with all the sensations and rewards that come with it, without the fear of unseen dangers lurking below the depths. As we navigate these waters, we remain blissfully aware that we are in a vast, controlled environment – a perfect blend of freedom and security, where we are free to explore without losing sight of the shore.

Under the light of this majestic Full Moon in Cancer, we experience a much-needed benevolence, as we energetically prepare to close the year, turning the page on everything that was contained in it. We may not be able to tangibly stay in these chapters as much as we would like to, but pages that we’ve read remain with us, in our minds and hearts, long after we’ve finished the book. For the next couple of days, we may experience a rundown, a review, a revisiting that certainly will pull at the heartstrings. Yet, as we revisit these memories, akin to re-watching a cherished, sentimental movie, our emotional response, though profound, may unlikely possess the raw intensity we’ve experienced the first time we saw it. We’re poised to feel the spectrum of emotions anew, but with a wisdom that comes from having lived through them once already. In moments when nostalgia’s kaleidoscope threatens to overwhelm, let us gently remind ourselves to pan out to the present. Here we stand, at the precipice of the year’s end—a testament to our resilience. We’ve not only endured but have extracted wisdom from our journey, emerging stronger and more capable. This realization lights our way forward, as we approach the door leading to 2024!
